Map data and credits
Every plate is drawn from open map data. The credit is printed on the plate itself, and it must stay visible when you print or share the file.
OpenStreetMap
Buildings, roads, water, woods and parks come from OpenStreetMap. © OpenStreetMap contributors. The data is available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0. The artwork we draw from it is ours; the data underneath stays open.
The credit line on your plate
Every plate carries a credit line for its map data, for example: “Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence · openstreetmap.org/copyright”. The open licences require it. When you print or share your files, the credit line must stay visible and complete: do not crop it, cover it or remove it.
National and other open sources
Depending on where your plate is drawn, the drawing engine also reads other open data, such as national building and address registers and Overture Maps. For the Netherlands that can include open data from the Dutch Kadaster and PDOK, and the 3D BAG building data from TU Delft and 3DGI, which is published under CC BY 4.0. Which sources were used for a plate is written on that plate and in the credit file that comes with your download.
Finding your address
To place an address on the map, we send the text of the address to a public address service (for countries without their own service: Photon, which searches OpenStreetMap data): the US Census Geocoder for addresses in the United States, and the PDOK Locatieserver for addresses in the Netherlands. The privacy page says what that means for your data.
The stars
The “sky above your town” option draws the stars from the Yale Bright Star Catalogue, which is in the public domain.
